How to report SEO results to clients

Clients judge SEO by what they can see. A good monthly report shows three things: what you did, what it changed, and what's next. Here's a routine small agencies can run in under an hour per client, with any tool.

1. Start with what changed

Open with two or three plain sentences: clicks from Google up or down on last month, the searches that grew, and any page that moved onto page one. Clients read the first paragraph and skim the rest, so put the answer there.

2. Show the work, and prove it

List the fixes made this month, and show that each one is confirmed: the missing titles are now there, the broken links now work, the slow page is faster. A fix the client can see confirmed is worth more than a long list of activity.

3. Connect the work to the numbers

Where you can, pair a change with its result: the service page you rewrote now ranks for the search it targets; the pages you fixed get more clicks. Be honest when it's too early to tell. SEO often takes weeks to show.

4. Keep the numbers few

Clicks and impressions from Google

From Google's own search data: what people actually searched and clicked.

Positions for the searches that matter

Five to ten that bring customers, not hundreds.

Enquiries or sales, if you can see them

The number the client really cares about.

Site health

One score, and the serious problems still open.

5. End with what's next

Three things you'll do next month, and anything you need from the client, such as approval for new page copy or access to their website. It makes the next report easy to write.

Questions

How long should an SEO report be?
One or two pages. Lead with what changed, show the work proven, and keep the numbers to the few that matter to the client.
How often should I report?
Monthly suits most clients: SEO changes slowly, so weekly reports mostly show noise.
